County commission set to approve massive solar project

Sandoval County is moving forward with a significant solar energy project that promises to enhance renewable energy resources in the region. During the Planning and Zoning Public Hearing on December 10, 2024, officials discussed a proposal for a large-scale solar facility on a vacant 1,833-acre site located in southeastern Sandoval County, approximately two miles west of New Mexico Highway 14.

The proposed solar project will feature a ground-mounted tracking system, solar panels, DC to AC inverters, and a battery energy storage system. Additionally, it will include an electrical switching station, an operations and maintenance building, a storage area, access roads, and a security fence with entry gates. This comprehensive setup aims to bolster the county's energy infrastructure while promoting sustainable practices.

County staff recommended that the Planning and Zoning Commission forward the proposal to the Board of County Commissioners with a favorable recommendation, citing findings of fact and conditions of approval outlined in the staff report. The presence of the project’s representatives, including Mariano Brandi, the country manager for PCR in the U.S., indicates strong support and readiness to address any questions from the community.
