Rural hospitals face crisis as closures loom

During a recent government meeting, officials addressed ongoing concerns regarding traffic safety and hospital recruitment efforts in the community.

A discussion emerged about a local bridge where efficiency measures had been lowered due to anticipated issues. Despite these adjustments, officials noted that some drivers continue to exceed the speed limit, prompting calls for further action to enhance safety. One official emphasized the importance of community feedback, stating that if residents notice ongoing problems, they should report them for resolution.

In a separate update, the hospital board reported progress in recruiting medical staff, with a new OBGYN set to start in December. This addition is seen as a crucial step towards reopening the obstetrics unit, although further recruitment efforts are necessary, including the search for a new CEO.

A concerning report from the Center for Health Care Quality and Payment Reform highlighted the precarious situation of rural hospitals in Kansas, revealing that 63% are at risk of closure. Since 2015, eight hospitals have shut down, with over 90 more facing immediate threats. Despite these challenges, local officials expressed optimism about the health of their own hospital, hoping it remains stable.
