California lawmakers advance crucial credit-building legislation

During a recent government meeting, the committee convened to discuss several legislative items, including the notable SB 924, introduced by Senator Bradford. This bill aims to remove the sunset provision set for July 1, 2025, from a previous measure, SB 1157, which allows individuals to voluntarily report their on-time rent payments to credit agencies. Senator Bradford highlighted the success of the existing program, noting that thousands of individuals have successfully established credit and purchased homes since its implementation in 2020.

The senator emphasized that the bill continues to provide essential support for low-income renters in California, enabling them to improve their credit scores while still being responsible for their rent payments and associated fees. The committee expressed unanimous support for the bill, which was subsequently passed to appropriations following a roll call vote.

In addition to SB 924, the committee also approved a consent calendar that included multiple bills, such as SB 575, SB 949, and SB 1034, all moving forward to appropriations. The meeting concluded with a successful vote on item SP 554, further demonstrating the committee's commitment to advancing legislative measures aimed at supporting California residents.
