County Commissioners Approve Controversial Zoning Change

During a recent government meeting, the Board of County Commissioners addressed several key items, including the first reading of Ordinance Number 2024-017, which proposes significant changes to the zoning and comprehensive plan of Josephine County. The ordinance seeks to amend the zoning designation of specific properties from \"Woodlot Resource\" to \"Bridal Residential R-R 5,\" effectively transitioning the land use from forested areas to residential development.

The discussion was initiated by Vice Chair Commissioner Baertschiger, who took over proceedings after a fellow commissioner recused themselves due to a potential conflict of interest. The ordinance, which has undergone a lengthy approval process since its inception in June 2021, was presented by Mr. Black from the Community Development department. He outlined the history of the application, noting that it had been appealed multiple times to the Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) before receiving final approval from the Board of Commissioners in April 2024. Notably, no further appeals were filed following the last land use decision.

The board unanimously approved the first reading of the ordinance and scheduled a second reading for September 11, 2024. Following this, the meeting opened up for public comments, allowing citizens to voice their opinions on any subject matter.
