Residents demand urgent safety measures at dangerous intersection

Residents of Stevens Road voiced serious concerns about traffic safety during a recent government meeting, highlighting the dangers at the intersection of Piney Plains Road and Stevens Road. James Center, a long-time resident, described the intersection as hazardous, noting that the three lanes narrow significantly, leaving insufficient space for vehicles. This situation often forces oncoming traffic to navigate dangerously close to the grassy edge of the road.

Center pointed out that the visibility at the intersection is compromised by a slight hill, making it difficult for drivers to safely enter the turning lane. He emphasized the risk of head-on collisions, particularly as parents frequently line up their vehicles along Stevens Road to pick up children from a nearby school bus stop. This practice has led to numerous near-misses, with children and parents often crossing the road unexpectedly.

Additionally, Center raised concerns about the lack of sidewalks at the beginning of Stevens Road, which exacerbates the danger for pedestrians. While sidewalks begin further down the road, the gaps create a hazardous environment for families and dog walkers, forcing them to walk in the roadway. The disconnected bike trails further complicate the situation, contributing to the overall safety challenges in the area.

The residents are urging local authorities to address these issues to improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians in the community.
