Repair efforts underway after devastating railroad washout

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed several key items, including the extension of a contract with the City of Longs Falls for the use of the West Mountain parking lot. This contract, which supports maintenance by the county and the local snowmobile club, was previously approved under resolution 355 of 2023. The extension was unanimously approved by the committee.

Another significant topic was the update on the railroad washout repairs in the Thurman area. Officials reported that repairs are nearing completion, with expectations to finish by mid-July. The damage, which required over $600,000 in repairs, has depleted the county's reserve funds, necessitating a transfer from the county fund balance to cover costs. The contractor, Hal Raven, along with Regal Brothers Construction, is actively working on the repairs, and officials expressed hope that the final costs would not exceed initial estimates.

The meeting also included a request for an update on the railroad situation, as requested by Chairman Conover, indicating ongoing concerns about infrastructure maintenance in the region.
