Community rallies to deploy innovative fire suppression units

In a recent community meeting, Al Reeder, senior warden at Newport Lodge, announced a significant initiative aimed at enhancing fire safety in Woodbury. The project, inspired by a similar effort in Minnesota, involves the donation of advanced fire suppression units to local public safety departments.

Reeder, who has been a resident of Woodbury since 2014, expressed his desire to give back to the community. He collaborated with Elizabeth Olsen from the public safety department, who revealed that they were already considering the implementation of such units. This alignment of goals facilitated a swift fundraising effort, supported by local organizations including the Newport Masonic Lodge and Heppner's Auto Repair, resulting in the acquisition of 22 fire suppression units.

These state-of-the-art devices, designed to extinguish fires quickly and efficiently, can be deployed by police officers, who are often the first responders to fire incidents. The units work by releasing a dry aerosol that can suppress flames in a space of up to 5,000 cubic feet within seconds, potentially preventing extensive damage and saving lives.

The initiative aims to equip each of the 40 police squad cars in the area with these units, allowing officers to address fire emergencies more effectively before the fire department arrives. Reeder emphasized the importance of this tool in enhancing public safety and reducing property damage, highlighting its ease of use and minimal cleanup requirements.

The meeting concluded with a demonstration video showcasing the effectiveness of the fire suppression units, further underscoring the community's commitment to proactive safety measures. This initiative marks a significant step forward in fire safety for Woodbury, reflecting a collaborative effort to protect residents and their properties.
