Scott County Schools launch ambitious literacy and emotional learning plans

In a recent Scott County government meeting, the board approved a comprehensive literacy plan aimed at enhancing reading skills for students in grades K through 8, as mandated by the New Virginia Literacy Act. Kelsey Taylor, the presenter, outlined the plan developed in collaboration with reading specialists, emphasizing a commitment to evidence-based literacy instruction. The core curriculum will utilize the SABOS MyView program for grades K-5, supplemented by the Hegarty reading program for early grades and intervention strategies from the University of Florida and Texas University for struggling readers.

The plan also includes extensive training for teachers and administrators, with a detailed schedule set for the upcoming school year. Monitoring student progress through assessments and involving parents and the community are key components of the initiative.

Additionally, the board approved the Camochi social-emotional learning program for pre-K through 2nd grade, which aims to teach children about emotions, respect, and conflict resolution. The program, which has been piloted successfully at Yuma Elementary School, is expected to cost around $11,000 initially, with plans to expand it to 5th grade in the future.

Both initiatives reflect a proactive approach to improving educational outcomes in Scott County, with board members expressing optimism about the potential impact on students and teachers alike.
