Assembly debates crucial funding increase for local education

In a recent government meeting, the assembly approved several key items, including a memorandum of understanding with the Bridal Alaska Community Action Program for a mutual self-help housing initiative in Ketchikan, and a tideland lease agreement with Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary LLC. The assembly also awarded a contract to Pool Engineering Incorporated for the Valley Park wall replacement, totaling $183,600.

During the meeting, assembly member Thompson raised concerns regarding the annual rent of $602.50 for the tideland lease, questioning its fairness compared to property taxes. Staff clarified that the rent is based on borough code, which stipulates a rate of 2.5% of the unimproved value of the tidelands. The assembly discussed the lease's 55-year term, noting that it allows for adjustments every five years based on property appraisals.
