Parents rally for crucial funding in school district debate

During a recent government meeting, community member Kara Wallace voiced her support for Ordinance 2045, which pertains to school district funding. Speaking as a parent of a student at Fawn Mountain Elementary School, Wallace emphasized the importance of the Indian Education Act (IEA) Preschool program, which serves both Native and non-Native students.

Wallace highlighted that students who attend the IEA preschools demonstrate superior performance in language arts and math, along with higher graduation rates compared to their peers. She expressed concern that this evidence-based program was not adequately represented in the funding request memo from the school superintendent.

The community member urged the board to prioritize the IEA preschool funding, noting its critical role in closing the achievement gap between Native and non-Native students.
