The Westchester Historical Commission is gearing up for a significant celebration in 2025, marking the 200th anniversary of Marquis de Lafayette's farewell tour of the United States. Chair Tom Walsh announced that the main event will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Westchester, following a series of commemorative activities that will begin in Paris, France, on July 11, 2025, and continue across the United States for approximately 14 months.
The event is being organized in collaboration with several historical organizations, including the American Friends of Lafayette and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Walsh detailed plans for the day, which will start with activities at the Brandywine Battlefield in the morning, followed by a mini parade in Westchester in the afternoon. The parade will span six blocks along High Street, culminating at Marshall Square Park, with a brief presentation at the old courthouse.
In addition to the parade, the commission is considering a faux dinner reenactment in the courthouse, featuring toasts and music performed by individuals portraying historical figures from Lafayette's time. The evening will conclude with a celebratory gathering at the 40 Fours Pavilion, where attendees will have the opportunity to honor Lafayette's legacy.
Walsh emphasized the importance of community involvement, particularly encouraging youth participation in the parade. The commission is also exploring fundraising opportunities to support the event's activities. As plans develop, further details will be shared with the community, ensuring that Westchester plays a prominent role in this historic commemoration.
