During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress of a comprehensive housing action plan developed in collaboration with Makers and Leelink Consulting Group. The plan, adopted by Anacortes in early 2023, outlines numerous strategies aimed at improving housing outcomes in the city. While many of these strategies extend beyond the current project scope, several key recommendations will be integrated into the city's 20-year planning process.
The meeting highlighted the importance of zoning boundary changes and the assessment of industrial land supply as critical next steps. A land capacity analysis indicated that the existing zoning scheme meets the numerical housing needs, but adjustments may enhance outcomes. The team plans to explore various housing types and commercial uses, ultimately drafting two land use alternatives for comparison.
Officials aim to present initial drafts of updated goals and policies related to land use, housing, and economic development by late summer or early fall. Additionally, ongoing work on climate-related issues, including greenhouse gas inventories, will inform these updates.
Participants were encouraged to engage with the project through sticky notes, the project website, and direct communication with city staff. The meeting concluded with a brief Q&A session, allowing attendees to voice their questions and concerns before transitioning to smaller group discussions.
