Housing Crisis Sparks Urgent Call for Development Action

During a recent government meeting, local officials and community members voiced strong support for the proposed housing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) project in Middleville, emphasizing the urgent need for affordable housing in Barry County. The discussions highlighted the challenges developers face in making housing projects financially viable without government assistance.

Travis, a representative from the Right Place organization, underscored the critical role of the housing TIF tool, stating that without such financial interventions, housing projects are unlikely to progress. He pointed out that even in larger cities like Grand Rapids, developers unanimously agreed that financial assistance is essential for any new projects to move forward. He noted the disparity between high-end developments in affluent areas and the pressing need for affordable housing in Barry County.

Chelsea Foster, a Hastings resident and member of various local boards, echoed these sentiments, describing the unique potential of the proposed site for development. She highlighted the project's capacity to enhance the local tax base and support the community by attracting new residents, which could also benefit local services like volunteer firefighting.

Dan Hue, a Wetland Township resident, emphasized the critical housing shortage in the county, calling for a variety of housing types to meet diverse needs. He cautioned against relying on state or federal assistance, suggesting that local initiatives are crucial for progress. Hue argued that rejecting the TIF would leave the property undeveloped and without value for years to come.

Bonnie Geddes from the Barry County Community Foundation reinforced the idea that approving the TIF is a necessary first step toward addressing the housing crisis. She presented a housing toolkit developed to identify and tackle the challenges of attracting developers to the area, advocating for a welcoming approach to all types of housing, particularly for the workforce.
