In a recent incident in Saint Mary's County, Maryland, a server at a local establishment, Quenisha Octavia Butler, was found to have served an alcoholic beverage to an underage confidential informant without verifying her age. The beverage in question was a Sicilian Sunset, which was ordered by the informant.
Following the incident, Sergeant Merritt of the local sheriff's office alerted Deputy Stephen Myers from the alcohol enforcement unit. Upon arrival, Deputy Myers informed Butler of the violation, to which she admitted her failure to check the informant's identification before serving the drink. Butler expressed regret over the incident and acknowledged the importance of age verification in alcohol service, noting that many servers often neglect to ask for identification.
As a result of the violation, Deputy Myers indicated that an offense report would be filed, and both Butler and the establishment's licensees would be summoned to appear before the relevant board. The alcoholic beverage served was purchased by Sergeant Merritt using Alcohol Enforcement Bank funds, and evidence from the transaction, including photographs and a receipt, was collected and documented. The beverage itself was subsequently discarded by the establishment's staff.
Butler, who has been in her position for two years, stated that she has served alcohol for the same duration. The incident raises concerns about compliance with alcohol service regulations and the importance of age verification in preventing underage drinking.
