Firefighters Highlight Community Support Amid Battery Facility Concerns

During a recent meeting of the Grosse Ile Fire Commission, members discussed the importance of community awareness regarding the fire department's activities, particularly in light of a recent fire incident. A request was made for a detailed update on the event, including response times and the actions taken by firefighters, to be presented in July. This initiative aims to highlight the department's role beyond emergency medical services, emphasizing that fires do occur on Grosse Ile.

Mickey Bartlett, a trustee candidate, expressed gratitude to the fire chief for training sessions on Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and acknowledged the dedication of volunteer firefighters who often sacrifice personal time for training and community service. Margaret Shelton, another trustee candidate, raised concerns about the safety protocols associated with the new DTE battery energy facility being constructed in the area. Drawing from her experience in the automotive industry, she highlighted potential hazards related to lithium batteries and urged the fire department to ensure they receive adequate training and support to handle any incidents that may arise from the facility.
