Community rallies for Lafayette Trail marker installation

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed plans to commemorate General Lafayette's historical visit to the region with a series of events and the installation of a marker. The meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts between local community groups, including the Pointe Fork chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Fluvannock Historical Society, to celebrate Lafayette's legacy.

The discussions centered around two key locations: Columbia and Wilmington. In Columbia, a significant meal was hosted at the now-closed Lee's Tavern, where Lafayette was greeted with official toasts and speeches. The Wilmington event will feature a marker placed in front of the tavern where Lafayette stayed, with permissions already secured from the landowner.

The proposed marker will be part of the Lafayette Trail marker system, which spans 24 states. The nonprofit organization Lafayette Trail, Inc. will provide the marker and mounting pole at no cost, while local officials will oversee its installation and maintenance. The county's approval is required to proceed, and the board unanimously supported a motion to authorize the county administrator to send a letter of willingness to Lafayette Trail, Inc.

This initiative not only aims to honor Lafayette's contributions but also seeks to enhance community engagement through educational and celebratory activities. The meeting concluded with a commitment to beautify the properties involved, marking a significant step in preserving local history and fostering community pride.
