Worcester Technical High School is set to launch The Pines Cafe, a student-run culinary teaching cafe located in the Title Health Pavilions in Ocean Pines, Maryland. This innovative initiative, a collaboration between Worcester Technical High School, the Worcester County Board of Education, and Title Health, aims to provide students with hands-on experience in managing a small business while serving the community.
Scheduled to open in September 2024, The Pines Cafe will operate Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 3 PM, offering a menu that includes breakfast items, baked goods, and lunch options such as paninis and salads. The cafe will be staffed primarily by students participating in the Maryland Apprenticeship Program, allowing them to gain practical skills while earning wages. Students will be required to complete 450 hours of work to fulfill apprenticeship requirements, which can be achieved during the summer and their senior year.
The cafe is designed to be self-sufficient, generating enough revenue to cover operational costs, including salaries and supplies. Profits will be reinvested into the culinary and pastry arts program at Worcester Technical High School, helping to offset rising educational costs. The initiative is touted as the first of its kind in Maryland, providing students with essential skills in areas such as food costing, customer service, and community relations.
The partnership with Title Health includes a nominal lease fee of $1 per year, covering utilities and other overhead costs. The cafe will also serve patients at the nearby cancer center, further integrating the cafe into the community.
As the project moves forward, the school plans to hire two part-time supervisors to oversee operations, ensuring that students receive guidance while managing the cafe. The initiative not only aims to enhance students' culinary skills but also to prepare them for future careers, fostering confidence and work ethic through real-world experience.
