Renaming park honors legacy of community leader

During a recent government meeting, the board approved the renaming of a local park to honor Stephen Handy Long, with the official title now designated as Stephen Handy Long Memorial Park. The decision followed a brief discussion led by the superintendent, who sought the board's approval for the name change.

Board member Mr. Buchanan raised a question regarding the status of the Stephen Long, Worcester County Pioneer Scholarship, which was established for graduates of Stephen Long Elementary and Worcester High School. Although the current status of the scholarship was uncertain, the superintendent committed to investigating and providing an update.

The motion to rename the park was made by Mr. Smack and seconded by Mr. Buchanan, receiving unanimous support from the board members present. It was noted that portraits of Stephen Long have been displayed in all 14 schools within the district since their presentation in the early 2000s, further solidifying his legacy in the community.

The meeting also featured a transition to discussions about a lease agreement for a project led by Chef Phil Cropper, who was introduced as a talented and humble figure in the community. The board expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming presentation related to this project, indicating a focus on community engagement and development.
