School closures deepen crisis for underserved students

During a recent government meeting, former trustee Leticia Anderson raised significant concerns regarding the impact of school closures and consolidations on students, particularly those from underserved communities. Citing a study from Brown University, Anderson argued that such closures do not yield financial savings and instead lead to increased absenteeism, which can further diminish funding for schools.

Anderson emphasized that these closures disproportionately affect schools serving higher populations of minority students, exacerbating existing inequalities. She pointed out that merging lower-performing students with higher-achieving peers does not result in improved test scores, and often leads to increased disciplinary issues among displaced students.

Moreover, Anderson highlighted logistical challenges associated with closed schools, noting that many are situated in areas where it is difficult to repurpose the facilities. While she acknowledged the need for changes within the education system, she stressed that merely implementing guardrails would not adequately address the deeper issues created by school closures.
