City Council Approves Major Redevelopment Plan Unanimously

The city council convened to discuss significant developments, including the approval of the preliminary plat for the Fairway Subdivision and a public hearing on a new redevelopment plan.

The council unanimously approved the preliminary plat for the Fairway Subdivision, with a motion made by Councilmember Hartman and seconded by Councilmember Eley. The vote concluded with all seven members in favor, indicating strong support for the project.

Following this, the council opened a public hearing regarding the redevelopment plan for an area of approximately 100.7 acres, bounded by North Cedar Avenue, East 6th Street, North Second Avenue, and East 9th Street, designated as redevelopment area number 17. Randy Chick presented the general redevelopment plan, highlighting the necessity of establishing a framework for future development, particularly when utilizing tax increment financing. The plan outlines various initiatives, including infrastructure improvements, land use patterns, and zoning recommendations.

Chick noted that the planning commission had previously reviewed the plan on May 21, where it received a unanimous recommendation for approval. After the presentation, the public hearing was closed, and a motion to approve the redevelopment plan was made by Eley and seconded by Beam. The council is expected to deliberate further on this initiative, which aims to enhance the area’s development potential while aligning with the city’s comprehensive plan.
