Harrisburg faces significant tax increases in new budget

During a recent council meeting, officials discussed the approval of the recommended budget for fiscal year 2024-2025, highlighting significant increases in property taxes and overall expenditures. The proposed budget totals approximately $7.3 million, with $3.3 million allocated for town operations and an additional $4 million earmarked for land acquisition for parks.

Concerns were raised regarding the impact of rising property taxes on residents, particularly in light of a projected increase in property assessments. One resident noted that their property taxes would rise by $442 annually due to an increased assessment value of $108,000, with additional taxes from Cabarrus County bringing the total to $1,090. This increase comes amid broader economic pressures, as the resident pointed out that the cost of living continues to rise, prompting a need for residents to adjust their expectations.

The council also reported an increase in property tax collections of $530,000 and sales tax revenues of $700,000 from 2023 to 2024, totaling $1.24 million. This financial growth raises questions about how the town will manage increased service demands and whether sufficient funds will be allocated to community projects, such as parks.

With a projected population of 12,224 adults in Harrisburg, of which 90.9% are homeowners, the council faces the challenge of balancing budgetary needs with the financial realities of its constituents, particularly those with lower incomes.
