Mayor proclaims Amateur Radio Week to honor community heroes

In a recent Virginia Beach City Council meeting, Mayor Bobby Dyer opened with a moment of silence to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the community and the nation. Following this, the council conducted a roll call, confirming all members were present, and proceeded to certify the closed session with a unanimous vote.

The council then approved the minutes from previous sessions, including formal and informal meetings held in May and June 2024. A highlight of the meeting was the proclamation of Amateur Radio Week, scheduled for June 17-21, 2024. Mayor Dyer recognized the contributions of the Virginia Beach Ham Radio Club, which boasts over 800 licensed operators who provide essential emergency communication services. The mayor emphasized the club's commitment to public safety and their role in homeland security efforts, particularly during emergencies.

Douglas Dougan, president of the Virginia Beach Ham Radio Club, expressed gratitude for the recognition and invited the community to participate in the upcoming American Radio Relay Field Day event, where operators will demonstrate their skills over a 24-hour period. The event is set to take place at Great Neck Park, showcasing the club's dedication to emergency preparedness and public service.

The meeting also included discussions on the acquisition of agricultural land preservation easements, with plans to purchase 57.70 acres at Muddy Creek Road and 66.7 acres at Land of Promise Road. Public hearings on this matter are expected to follow, allowing community input on the initiative.
