Residents Demand Urgent Traffic Signal for Safety on Laskin Road

Residents of Virginia Beach are advocating for a traffic signal at the intersection of Laskin Road and Wynwood Drive, citing safety concerns as traffic increases due to ongoing infrastructure improvements. Bob Layman, a pediatrician and vice president of the Lind Leer Civic League, addressed the city council, highlighting the dangers posed by the current traffic conditions, especially for pedestrians and cyclists.

Layman noted that the ongoing project to widen Laskin Road into an eight-lane highway, along with the repair of a bridge built in 1938, has led to a significant rise in vehicular traffic and speeds. He expressed concern for residents attempting to cross multiple lanes of fast-moving traffic to access local amenities and the beach. The project also includes new bike lanes, which have seen increased usage, further complicating the intersection's safety.

James Horner, president of the Lindley Ear Civic League, echoed Layman's concerns, referencing a 2022 traffic signal warrant analysis that indicated a traffic light is warranted at the intersection. He emphasized the risks faced by students, teachers, and local residents navigating the busy road, particularly as the area prepares for new developments, including a large mixed-use project known as the Canopy.

The community has been advocating for a traffic signal for over five years, with safety being a top priority. The council is now considering a motion to authorize the installation of the traffic signal, responding to the residents' urgent request for improved safety measures at this critical intersection.
