Community rallies for affordable housing and gun violence awareness

During a recent government meeting, community engagement and support initiatives took center stage, highlighting the collaborative efforts of local organizations and residents. The meeting began with a celebration of the Bustle Family Center's crochet program, which honored three generations of African American women involved in the craft. Notable figures included Mercedes Brown, who has initiated a prom dress and tuxedo giveaway for seniors, and her sister La Roche Whitfield, who contributed a portrait of a senior volunteer. The program also recognized young crochet students and the contributions of Michael West, the Recreation Supervisor at Bustle Family Center.

In addition to the crochet program, the meeting announced two upcoming community events aimed at providing essential resources to residents. The first is a community resource fair scheduled for June 12 at the Durfee Innovation Society, offering assistance in areas such as food, clothing, technology, and childcare. The second event, an affordable housing summit on June 27 at Breakers Covenant International Church, will connect individuals facing homelessness with housing resources and support services.

Furthermore, the meeting acknowledged June as Gun Violence Awareness Month, with plans for a press conference, march, and rally on June 15 to raise awareness about gun violence in Detroit.
