Activists push for Juneteenth flag raising in Detroit

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on the observance of Juneteenth in Detroit, particularly the request to fly the Juneteenth flag over the city. A community member expressed ongoing concerns about the lack of a definitive timeline for when the flag would be raised, emphasizing its significance as a legal holiday. The individual also highlighted plans for a commemorative march at the Martin Luther King Memorial Park, coinciding with the 61st anniversary of Dr. King's iconic \"I Have a Dream\" speech. Preparations for the event include planting flowers and organizing a peaceful ceremony to honor Dr. King.

Additionally, the community member raised issues regarding the availability of restroom facilities at the park, noting a lack of response from city officials despite previous communications. A meeting is scheduled for June 18 at Duffield Library to discuss the park's restoration, which has received allocated funding.

In response, city officials confirmed that a flag-raising ceremony for Juneteenth is scheduled for June 14 at Spirit Plaza, providing a flyer with details about the event. This ceremony aims to honor the significance of Juneteenth and will coincide with the community's planned activities.
