Google Fiber set to transform city's broadband landscape

In a recent public hearing, city officials discussed the potential granting of a franchise for communication services to Google Fiber Nevada LLC, marking a significant step towards enhancing broadband Internet access in the community. Gina Bishop, the franchise officer for the city, presented the proposal, highlighting the collaborative efforts that led to the development of a new franchise agreement template designed to encompass both telecommunications and broadband services.

The proposed agreement, which follows a resolution adopted by the council on May 15, 2024, is seen as a pivotal moment for the city. Bishop emphasized the importance of Google Fiber's commitment to investing in high-speed broadband infrastructure, which is expected to attract remote workers and diversify the local economy. The agreement outlines a five-year term, stipulating that Google Fiber will contribute 5% of its telecommunications gross revenue and 2% of its broadband gross revenue to the city.

City Manager Mike Jansen echoed the sentiment, describing the day as a significant milestone for the city. The franchise agreement is set to be eligible for adoption later in the meeting, further solidifying the partnership between the city and Google Fiber in expanding essential communication services throughout the area.
