During a recent government meeting, residents from the Martin Luther King Homes voiced their concerns regarding management changes and housing stability. Patty Hunt, a long-time resident, expressed frustration over the new management's failure to honor previous commitments, including the promise of a purchase opportunity within five years. She reported that the new owner has raised rents significantly, despite prior agreements stating that increases would not occur for three years. Hunt also highlighted a lack of communication from the management, noting that important notices were often left in mailboxes without proper documentation.
Another resident echoed these concerns, stating that they were informed they had fallen out of a low-income housing program without clear explanations. This resident, who has lived in the community since 2008, mentioned that the new management indicated they could opt out of the program, leaving residents uncertain about their housing future.
In response to the residents' grievances, committee members emphasized the importance of first connecting with the local council member to address these issues. They assured residents that assistance would be provided to facilitate communication with the appropriate representatives. The meeting underscored the ongoing challenges faced by residents in maintaining their housing rights amid management transitions and policy changes.
