County Commissioners Propose Budget Cuts Amid Rising Sheriff Costs

During a recent meeting on May 15, 2024, the Jones County Board of Commissioners reviewed the proposed fiscal year 2024-2025 budget, which maintains the county property tax rate at 0.74. The proposed budget includes a significant increase in the sheriff's budget, which is set to rise by $348,880 to a total of approximately $2.6 million. This marks a substantial increase of over $1 million compared to the budget approved four years ago.

Despite the proposed increase, the board noted that an average of $89,020 in unspent funds has remained in the sheriff's budget annually over the past three fiscal years. In light of this, the commissioners requested a $100,000 reduction in the sheriff's budget for the upcoming fiscal year. This reduction will come from cuts in overtime, boat fuel, and vehicle maintenance, with the funds being reallocated to Jones County Public Schools.

The meeting also highlighted salary adjustments for the sheriff's office, including a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) totaling $39,655 and a salary study increase of $126,415. Additionally, bonuses for certain certifications could add another $18,000 to the overall compensation.

A public hearing is scheduled for June 3, 2024, prior to the presentation of the budget ordinance, allowing community members to voice their opinions on the proposed budget changes. The board emphasized their commitment to collaboration with the sheriff's department, stating that they are not at odds and look forward to working together in the future.
