Yuma County faces urgent call to address housing crisis

During a recent government meeting, concerns were raised regarding the housing element of Yuma County's comprehensive plan, which was criticized for its brevity and reliance on outdated data. The housing element, consisting of only half a page, is based on a 2021 city of Yuma housing market assessment that itself draws from 2019 data. This has prompted calls for a reevaluation of the housing strategy in light of the ongoing affordable housing crisis affecting both Arizona and Yuma County.

A board member highlighted the need for updated information and a review process to address the housing crisis, questioning the rationale behind using older data when more recent analyses are available. The discussion also touched on the limited number of residential and commercial plats recorded in unincorporated Yuma County over the past four and a half years, with only ten plats documented—six for residential use, totaling approximately 300 lots.

The board was urged to consider the current housing situation and to provide clarity on the procedures for evaluating the housing element within the county's planning framework. The meeting concluded with an invitation for public input, although no additional comments were made at that time.
