Council approves controversial marijuana facility modifications

In a recent government meeting, the council addressed two significant items concerning marijuana facilities in the area. The first item involved a proposed license amendment for a colocated marijuana facility, which was met with a motion to deny. The motion, put forth by Councilman Hart and supported by Councilman Wishart, passed with a roll call vote of 5-2, with Councilmen Hornbuckle and President McDermott voting against the denial.

The second item on the agenda was the approval of a special land use and site plan modification for another colocated marijuana facility proposed by LJA Holdings. This modification seeks to remove the cultivation aspect from the operation, consolidating the retail and processing functions into a single 6,000 square foot building. The planning commission recommended approval of this modification, contingent upon meeting departmental requirements and conditions outlined in the planning department's memo.

The proposed site, located on the north side of Cherry Hill, will also include a concrete pad for future industrial development, with plans for a detention pond to manage stormwater runoff. The area is designated for industrial use in the 2018 master plan, and the development will maintain compliance with zoning ordinances, ensuring adequate buffering from nearby residential areas.

The council's discussions highlighted ongoing adjustments in the local marijuana industry, reflecting both regulatory challenges and opportunities for economic development.
