Heroic officer survives shooting to save lives

During a recent board meeting, the Oklahoma Police Department honored Sergeant Finbar Horan with the prestigious Award of Valor for his heroic actions during a life-threatening incident on March 11, 2024.

While off duty and working a security detail, Sergeant Horan intervened in a volatile situation at a business on Central Avenue, where a disgruntled truck driver confronted management. As tensions escalated, the driver produced a concealed .45 caliber handgun and opened fire on Horan, striking him five times. Despite his injuries, Horan engaged in a physical struggle with the assailant, ultimately subduing him with the help of a fellow security guard and a bystander.

Following the confrontation, Horan applied a tourniquet to his own leg before emergency services arrived. Authorities later discovered that the assailant had brought additional ammunition, indicating a potential plan for mass harm. Horan's quick response and bravery are credited with preventing further casualties that day.

In his acceptance speech, Horan expressed gratitude to the police department and his family, emphasizing the importance of training and resources in ensuring officer safety. The board acknowledged Horan's valor and the dedication of all officers in maintaining community safety, highlighting the critical role they play in preserving the quality of life for residents.
