Pontiac celebrates vibrant Juneteenth with community festivities

Pontiac City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in observance of Juneteenth, a recognized holiday in the city. Mayor Grimell announced that senior centers will remain open as cooling centers, thanks to the efforts of city staff.

During the meeting, Mayor Grimell reflected on the success of the city’s second annual Juneteenth celebration, emphasizing that it is a community event supported by the city council and staff. He praised events coordinator Robin Si for her hard work in organizing the festivities, which included vendor spaces for local businesses, musical performances, and a variety of activities for families, such as a kids zone featuring a bounce house and putt-putt golf. The event concluded with a fireworks display, marking a successful day of community engagement.

Councilman Rutherford echoed the mayor's sentiments, commending Si for her exceptional efforts in fundraising and organizing the event with limited resources. He highlighted the karaoke segment at Hidden River Park as a standout moment, noting the strong community participation and the joy it brought to attendees.

The meeting also addressed the adoption of the City of Pontiac's 2024-2025 Appropriations Act Ordinance. This marks the conclusion of a two-month process of budget review and revision, with the ordinance now set for ratification following a postponed second reading.
