City Council Approves Major Fireworks Display for Community Event

The Pontiac City Council convened to discuss and approve a fireworks permit for a community-focused display scheduled for June 30, 2024, at the M1 Concourse. The resolution, moved by Councilman James and seconded by Pro Tem Carrington, aims to authorize a 20-minute fireworks show sponsored by Coca Cola, set to begin at approximately 9:45 PM.

Planning Manager Yandrick provided details about the event, emphasizing that the fireworks will be launched from the north end of the site, near the intersection of Franklin Street and Rapid Street. The planning department confirmed that the fire department has reviewed and approved the plans, ensuring safety measures are in place. Notably, there will be no road closures, although the Rapid Street exit will be temporarily closed for cleanup after the display.

Yandrick also addressed community concerns regarding the frequency of fireworks displays at M1 Concourse, noting that this is the last pending fireworks permit application at this time. He mentioned that while there may be an increase in smaller private displays associated with charity events in the future, no new applications have been submitted recently.

The council's approval of this permit marks a continuation of community engagement through public events, following a series of fireworks displays earlier in June for the Juneteenth Festival and private events. The planning department remains open to future applications, ensuring that community interests are balanced with event planning.
