City Council Approves Historic Sign for Black Business Trail

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a proposed license agreement with Experience Champaign Urbana to install an interpretive sign as part of the African American Heritage Trail project. The sign will be located on the Main Street right of way, specifically in front of the Cinema Art Theater at 120 West Main Street.

The sign aims to highlight the history of black businesses in Urbana, with a particular focus on Shelton Laundry, which was historically situated at 1104 North Goodwin. The chosen location for the sign is designed to maximize visibility and educate the public about this significant aspect of local history.

City officials recommended that the council authorize the mayor to execute the license agreement, which is set for a duration of 20 years and can be terminated with a 30-day notice. The agreement includes provisions for maintenance and removal in case of emergencies. Notably, the city plans to waive the typical license fee of 92 cents per square foot, allowing the project to proceed without financial exchange.

During the meeting, council members raised questions regarding the sign's placement, content determination, and potential public input. It was clarified that the content would be developed by a committee working with Experience Champaign Urbana, and no public input had been solicited from neighboring property owners.

The resolution to approve the license agreement was moved to the consent agenda and passed unanimously, paving the way for the installation of the interpretive sign, which is expected to enhance community awareness of local African American history.
