Lake County community forum sparks call for action on equity

During a recent government meeting, Lake County officials discussed the timeline for future community engagement and the final report from the Lake Countywide Community Visioning Forum Planning Committee. The board agreed to reconvene on August 6 at 10 a.m. to continue discussions and review proposed amendments.

The meeting featured a presentation by Matthew Rothstein, the chief deputy county administrative officer, who highlighted the committee's formation in response to the social upheaval following the COVID-19 pandemic and incidents of racial injustice in 2020. The committee aimed to foster dialogue around issues of equity, inclusion, and community healing.

Georgina Marie Gordado, the former poet laureate of Lake County, opened the session with a poem emphasizing the importance of recognizing the land and its history. Rothstein noted that the committee held three public forums in April and May 2023, which aimed to gather diverse perspectives from residents. The forums were designed to address community needs and historical traumas, with a focus on promoting respect, fairness, and inclusion.

The report revealed key themes from the discussions, including the desire for residents to feel welcomed and valued, the lack of essential services, and the need for continued listening sessions and outreach efforts. The committee acknowledged that not all voices were heard during the forums, indicating a need for ongoing engagement and support for marginalized communities.

Dolores Farrell, a committee member, presented recommendations for future actions, including the establishment of an ongoing ad hoc committee to address diversity and inclusion issues, the continuation of community forums, and the development of anonymous surveys to capture the experiences of marginalized residents.

The meeting underscored the county's commitment to fostering a more inclusive community and the importance of ongoing dialogue to address the needs and concerns of all residents. The board expressed gratitude for the community's involvement and the collaborative efforts to create a more equitable Lake County.
