Somerville celebrates Juneteenth and champions biking initiatives

In a recent meeting, the town council of Somerville, South Carolina, made significant proclamations aimed at fostering community spirit and promoting healthy lifestyles. Mayor Tetschberry and council members officially declared June 19, 2024, as Juneteenth, encouraging residents to observe this historic day, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.

Additionally, the council proclaimed June 2024 as Bike Walk Summerville Month, recognizing the importance of sustainable transportation and healthy living. This initiative highlights the contributions of Bike Walk Somerville, an organization dedicated to improving pedestrian and cyclist safety. The council emphasized the benefits of walking and biking, including reduced traffic congestion and pollution, while urging residents to engage in activities that promote these modes of transportation.

The meeting also celebrated the achievements of the Somerville High School girls' softball team, who recently secured their second consecutive South Carolina High School League 5A state championship. Under the leadership of Coach Heather Tucker, the team completed an impressive season with a perfect record of 30-0. The council expressed gratitude for the hard work of the players and the support from the community, recognizing the positive impact the team has had on both the school and the town.
