School District Implements Groundbreaking AI Policy for Education

During a recent government meeting, the board recognized the resignations of two long-serving employees, Katie Blanco and Robbie Yanado. Blanco, who served as a teacher and K-6 department head of language arts, was commended for her dedication to the program. Yanado, a plumber with the maintenance staff, was also acknowledged for his years of service, with board members expressing their appreciation for his contributions to the district.

The meeting also featured discussions on a new policy regarding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Board member Missus Coniglio highlighted the importance of preparing both teachers and students to navigate AI systems, emphasizing the transformative potential of AI in the educational landscape. The policy aims to establish educational goals related to AI use, addressing critical areas such as privacy, data security, equity, responsible digital citizenship, and academic integrity.

As part of the implementation plan, the district will dedicate half a day during professional development sessions in August to introduce staff to AI tools and their applications in the classroom. The board is taking a cautious approach to AI integration, ensuring that educators are equipped to utilize these technologies effectively while maintaining a focus on responsible use. Additionally, Mister Keeney is collaborating with a software company, Magic Schools, to create a controlled environment for AI tools within the school setting, reinforcing the importance of proper AI usage for both students and staff.
