During a recent government meeting, council members addressed ongoing issues with restroom facilities at Thomas Johnson Park, highlighting significant plumbing problems that have led to repeated backups. Council member Waring initiated the discussion, emphasizing the urgency of the situation, particularly as the park hosts numerous after-school programs.
Mr. Kranzberg, a city official, explained that the plumbing issue stems from a bottleneck in the sewer line, specifically where it connects to the James Island Public Service District (JIPSD). He noted that the obstruction occurs due to a curve in the line, which has been exacerbated by foreign objects being flushed down toilets. Currently, city maintenance crews have been manually clearing the blockage, but a more permanent solution is needed.
Council members discussed the possibility of formally requesting assistance from JIPSD to address the issue. Waring suggested that the request could be more effective if it came from the city’s Public Works or Parks Department, rather than directly from individual council members. He expressed a desire for clarity on whether the problem lies on the city’s side or JIPSD’s, indicating that if it is the city’s responsibility, they would need to take action to rectify the situation.
The council agreed that communication between Charleston Water Systems (CWS) and JIPSD would be essential in resolving the matter. Mayor’s office involvement was also proposed to facilitate the request, ensuring that the appropriate channels are utilized to expedite a solution.
The meeting concluded with a consensus on the need for collaboration between the city and JIPSD to prevent future plumbing issues at the park, underscoring the importance of maintaining facilities that serve the community.
