In a recent city council meeting, Charleston Mayor William S. Cogswell Jr. led the assembly in honoring the LGBTQ+ community by proclaiming June 2024 as Pride Month. The proclamation recognizes the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to the city and emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, equality, and respect for all residents, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
The mayor highlighted the historical significance of Pride Month, which commemorates the Stonewall riots of 1969, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. The proclamation calls upon residents to celebrate diversity, participate in local Pride events, and advocate against discrimination and hate crimes.
Chase Glenn, Executive Director of the Alliance for Full Acceptance, expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that the proclamation not only supports the LGBTQ+ community but also acknowledges the broader fight for equal rights. He emphasized the importance of honoring LGBTQ+ elders and continuing the pursuit of justice and equality.
Additionally, the council recognized July 8, 2023, as National Collector Car Appreciation Day. This proclamation celebrates the cultural significance of classic car collection and restoration, highlighting its role in preserving American heritage and providing skilled jobs within the community. Councilman Kevin Shealy presented the proclamation, encouraging citizens to engage in related events and educate younger generations about the importance of automotive preservation.
The meeting underscored Charleston's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment while celebrating its diverse cultural heritage through both LGBTQ+ recognition and automotive appreciation.
