City council faces backlash over controversial pay raise proposal

During a recent Roanoke City Council meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding a proposed pay raise for city officials, with community members urging council members to reconsider the timing and transparency of the decision-making process.

Bev Fitzpatrick, a returning council member, was welcomed back as citizens voiced their frustrations over the lack of public awareness surrounding the pay raise proposal. One resident, who has been engaged with the council for over three decades, described the situation as \"one of the most egregious things\" to come before the council, emphasizing that many citizens are unaware of the discussions taking place.

The resident highlighted the challenges faced by low-income individuals who may not be able to attend meetings scheduled during working hours, suggesting that the council should ensure public input is prioritized and that discussions are held in a more accessible manner. They called for the pay raise proposal to be presented to the public in a fair and transparent way, rather than being decided in a closed setting.

In addition to the pay raise discussions, interim city manager Mary Frazier invited council members and the public to participate in two upcoming docuseries events focused on the ongoing situation in Palestine and Israel. Scheduled for July 11 and July 25 at the main library branch, these events aim to foster community engagement and understanding of current global issues.
