Cook County Board Celebrates Lula Cafe's James Beard Award

The Cook County Board convened recently, with several commissioners present and a few excused absences noted. The meeting began with a roll call, followed by a brief recess for a group photo.

Commissioner Casada introduced a resolution congratulating Lula Cafe, located in the 8th district, for receiving the prestigious 2024 James Beard Award for outstanding hospitality. Lula Cafe, a well-known establishment in Logan Square since 1999, was recognized as the only restaurant in Chicago and Cook County to receive this honor this year. Casada highlighted the cafe's commitment to community engagement, particularly its efforts to support individuals impacted by COVID-19 and its leadership in advocating for fair wages.

Chef Jason Hamill, who was present at the meeting, expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the pride he and his team take in their work as Chicagoans.

Additionally, Commissioner Kevin Morrison proposed several resolutions, including one recognizing International Non-Binary Peoples Day, which takes place annually on July 14. This resolution aims to raise awareness of non-binary identities and promote inclusivity.

Morrison also introduced a resolution honoring World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, which marks its 10th anniversary in 2024. He stressed the importance of understanding the complexities of human trafficking, noting that many victims are involved in labor trafficking rather than solely sex trafficking. He highlighted Chicago's unique position, being home to one of only five organizations in the nation that support men affected by trafficking.

Further resolutions included recognizing Parks and Recreation Month and honoring Jason Altman, the first deaf person to broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in American Sign Language, marking a significant milestone in representation for the deaf community.
