In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the future of the 127 Elm Street property, which is set for demolition as part of a broader initiative to enhance recreational facilities in the area. The property, now consolidated with an adjacent seven-acre parcel into a 12-acre site, has been earmarked for various community uses, including a proposed dog park and a new multi-generational community center.
The town acquired the 127 Elm Street property in 2015, which included a 30,000-square-foot facility. However, following extensive evaluations, it was determined that the building suffers from significant structural issues and would require costly upgrades to meet safety standards for public use. As a result, both a 2016 and a more recent 2023 feasibility study recommended demolishing the existing structure to make way for a new facility better suited to community needs.
The phased development plan outlines several stages, beginning with the demolition of the current building, estimated to cost around $588,000. Subsequent phases include constructing new tennis and basketball courts, relocating them out of flood-prone areas, and creating additional athletic fields and parking spaces. The total projected cost for the entire project, including the new community center, is approximately $17 million.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted the ongoing efforts to establish a dog park, funded through donations from the local Dog Park Association. This park aims to provide a dedicated space for pet owners and their dogs, enhancing recreational opportunities in the town.
Officials emphasized the importance of community input throughout the planning process, with multiple stakeholder meetings held to gather feedback on the proposed uses of the property. The discussions also touched on the need for improved connectivity within the park, including a proposed pedestrian bridge to facilitate access to the dog park.
As the town moves forward with these plans, officials remain committed to addressing the recreational needs of the community while ensuring that future developments are sustainable and beneficial for residents.
