In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a proposed residential development project located at the intersection of Santa Barbara Street and Ortega Street, adjacent to the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. The project aims to repurpose existing Quonset huts on the site, which currently includes a parking area, into residential housing, providing a total of six units.
The Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) reviewed the project in December 2023, expressing general approval of its size, bulk, and scale, deeming it compatible with the neighborhood. However, the HLC requested additional information regarding a covered canopy area included in the open yard calculations, particularly concerning its light levels and functionality for residents. Suggestions included increasing skylights and providing a model to better illustrate the area’s use.
The project is consistent with zoning regulations, although it may require a modification for the open yard area, as a significant portion is covered by the canopy structure. The planning commission is tasked with ensuring the project aligns with design guidelines and the architectural character of the area, as well as considering its impact on adjacent historic resources and public vistas.
A preliminary landscape plan was presented, although concerns were raised about the clarity of the proposed open yard space due to the extensive coverage of the canopy. The staff hearing officer will ultimately decide on any necessary modifications to the project, which aims to enhance residential options in the area while respecting its historical context.
