Patrick and Henry College softball team makes history with championship

In a momentous celebration, the Patrick and Henry Community College (PHCC) Lady Patriots were honored for their historic achievement as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 3 Softball World Series champions for the 2024 season. This victory marks a significant milestone, being the first national championship for any sports program at PHCC and the first in the Virginia Community College System's history.

During a proclamation ceremony held on June 14, 2024, Martinsville Mayor Elsie Jones commended the team for their extraordinary accomplishment, highlighting their victory over the defending champions, North Dakota CFC. Freshman shortstop Leah Rodriguez was recognized as the tournament's most valuable player, showcasing her impressive performance with a .500 batting average. Additionally, pitcher Morgan Strickland was acknowledged for her outstanding contributions, having pitched 38.2 out of 39 innings throughout the tournament.

Head coach Robbie Campbell received accolades as the Appalachian District Coach of the Year, further emphasizing the team's exceptional performance. The ceremony also recognized players Greenlee, Adiente, and Kendall Hopkins for their inclusion in the all-tournament team.

Assistant Vice President of Student Engagement and Athletic Director Brian Henderson expressed pride in the team's impact on the Martinsville community, noting the support they received from fans throughout the season. Team members Emily Gillie and JC Parham shared their gratitude for the recognition and reflected on the positive influence they have had on their community.
