Santa Rosa launches innovative dual language education program

During a recent government meeting, educators spotlighted the Santa Rosa dual language program, emphasizing its role in fostering effective communication and resilience among students. The program, which began its implementation in 2021 with preschool and kindergarten, has expanded to include third grade this year, reflecting a commitment to educating the whole child in alignment with Maricopa's portrait of a graduate.

The dual language model employs a unique roller coaster schedule, where students alternate between English and Spanish classrooms daily, ensuring a balanced 50/50 exposure to both languages. In the Spanish classroom, instruction is conducted entirely in Spanish, while the English classroom focuses on English language arts and social studies.

Recent curriculum adoptions have enhanced the program, providing teachers and students with Spanish instructional materials for math and supplementary science resources. This approach aims to maximize Spanish instruction across all subjects, reinforcing academic concepts and vocabulary through a method known as content bridging. This technique allows students to learn the same concepts in both languages, deepening their understanding.

The meeting included a model lesson demonstration, showcasing how teachers integrate content bridging in their lessons. Educators Miss Munoz and Miss Talbert, now in their second year as the second-grade dual language team, highlighted their intentional planning to engage students through collaborative learning structures.

The Santa Rosa dual language program is positioned as a leading initiative in the state, with ongoing support from consultants and a dedicated teaching staff committed to providing high-quality bilingual education.
