Water Supply Plans Unveiled Amid Growing Community Needs

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered on water resource management and infrastructure development in response to community needs and environmental challenges.

The Department of Water Supply reported ongoing efforts to develop new water sources, particularly in upcountry areas. Director Stuffelbean highlighted the creation of a mapping tool to track these developments, which include plans for constructing raw water reservoirs at the Kamoli treatment plant to enhance its output capabilities. Additionally, the department is exploring well development opportunities in collaboration with landowners and has contracted Fukunaga Engineers for aquifer exploration in the Makawa area.

While specific yield estimates from these new sources were not available, officials indicated that a comprehensive analysis would be shared in the future.

The Department of Environmental Management confirmed the expansion of the R1 wastewater line towards Lahaina, addressing community concerns about water availability for farming. The first phase of this project includes a pump station and initial reservoir construction, with plans to elevate the system further to utilize existing ditch systems for water distribution.

These initiatives reflect a proactive approach to addressing water scarcity and enhancing agricultural opportunities in the region, particularly in light of recent environmental challenges.
