City cracks down on property code violations

During a recent government meeting, multiple property code violations were addressed, primarily concerning properties located on Monroe Street. Cynthia Warren, a certified code enforcement professional, presented findings from inspections conducted on February 7, 2024, revealing significant issues across several properties.

The first case discussed involved the property at 2127 Monroe Street, where violations for accumulations and land clearance were noted. A notice of violation (NOV) was issued on February 23, 2024, and a hearing notice was posted on July 10, 2024. The owner has been ordered to rectify the violations by August 22, 2024, or face a daily fine of $250 without a cap. A compliance hearing is scheduled for August 27, 2024.

Similar violations were reported for properties at 2137, 2151, and 2157 Monroe Street, with each case following a similar timeline of inspections, notices, and hearings. In each instance, the properties were found to have accumulations of trash and overgrown grass, with the same deadline for compliance set for August 22, 2024, and subsequent hearings planned for August 27, 2024.

Warren confirmed that legal due process had been followed in all cases, and no property owners attended the hearings to contest the findings. The city has been granted permission to abate the nuisances if compliance is not achieved by the specified deadlines. The meeting underscored the city's commitment to maintaining property standards and addressing community concerns regarding neglected properties.
