In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the significant call volume from the Tucson Police Department (TPD) related to Quickie Mart, a retail establishment that sells skateboarding equipment. Over the past two years, Quickie Mart has generated two to three times more calls than its neighboring commercial properties, particularly during late-night hours, attributed to noise disturbances and skater activity.
Concerns were raised about safety issues, including a skate ramp positioned dangerously close to a dumpster, which could pose a risk to skaters. The meeting highlighted ongoing issues with debris accumulation on the property, with officials noting that compliance with code enforcement has not improved over time. The property lacks a designated alleyway, contrary to some descriptions, and the skate ramp is encroaching on parking space.
Quickie Mart's owner confirmed that all skateboarding lessons occur outside the store, and he has not sought permits for outdoor skating activities, despite the presence of large groups of skaters on weekends. The discussions underscored the need for further evaluation of the property’s impact on the surrounding area and potential regulatory measures to address the ongoing concerns.
