Clemson launches innovative safety plan for pedestrians and cyclists

The Clemson City Council convened recently to discuss significant developments, including the approval of the Clemson Area Action Plan, aimed at enhancing safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The council proposed awarding a contract to Stantec for $240,000, with the city responsible for only $24,000 due to an 80-20 grant partnership with Clemson University. This initiative marks a pioneering effort in the state, focusing on safety rather than traffic congestion, and is expected to span approximately 18 months.

The plan will explore various safety improvements, including potential pedestrian bridges and enhanced bike paths. The council expressed optimism about the project's swift progression and the subsequent pursuit of an implementation grant.

In another agenda item, the council addressed the continuation of transit services between the city of Seneca and Clemson. The existing agreement had expired, prompting a month-to-month extension while the Seneca transit system undergoes evaluation. The hourly rate for services will increase to $90.36, reflecting standard rates, as discussions continue regarding the future of the transit service.

Additionally, the council celebrated local achievements, including the crowning of Davis Walsh as Miss South Carolina, and promoted the upcoming Red Hill Reunion Funday, encouraging community participation in the festivities.
