Residents demand urgent action on affordable housing crisis

During a recent St. Petersburg council meeting, community members voiced urgent concerns regarding the escalating cost of living and the critical need for affordable housing in Pinellas County. One resident highlighted the personal impact of rising lease prices, noting that many families, including her own, are being forced to relocate due to unaffordability. She emphasized the importance of retaining the younger generation in the area, urging council members to prioritize affordable housing initiatives.

Kathy Filippelli, representing a local congregation, echoed these sentiments, discussing the mobilization of community members advocating for affordable housing solutions. She proposed utilizing church properties for housing development and suggested leveraging various funding sources, including state SHIP funds, local tax credits, and HUD resources, to support families earning below 80% of the area median income (AMI).

Filippelli also encouraged the council to implement policies that would require developers to provide affordable housing in exchange for density bonuses or zoning changes. She expressed gratitude for ongoing efforts by council members to establish such policies and called for increased affordable housing units in future developments, particularly at the Gas Plant restoration site.

Eli Gonzales, another speaker at the meeting, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to address the council, emphasizing the community's commitment to advocating for affordable housing solutions.
